Work in progress – Hannya mask tattoo

clareketon_tattoo_hannyamask
Great to do some more tattooing on this piece!  It’s a large chest piece and sleeve with a detailed design of a Hannya mask, cherry blossom, Koi fish, lotus flower and waves.  After doing the line work and shading it’s exciting to tattoo in the colour, the blue and pink lotus is finished and my client loves it!

Work in progress – hawk chest piece and sleeve

This is a large tattoo piece I’m currently working on with a hawk chest piece and full sleeve.  I designed it as a grey wash with only the leaves in colour and I’m really happy with how it’s coming along.

I’m completely booked until February and taking bookings for 2016, please contact me with any enquiries.

Painted Ladies – The history of female tattoo artists in Australia

thepaintedladies_book_clareketon_tattoo
I was thrilled to be featured in Clare November Miles’ book Painted Ladies – The history of female tattoo artists in Australia.

About the book – ‘This is the first book of its kind which seeks to show the accomplishments of outstanding Australian female tattoo artists past and present, by searching out the reason for their successes as well as the overwhelming obstacles that preclude most from achieving greatness.  Interviews with historically important photos feature Australia’s pioneering female tattoo artists – some well know and others never heard of.  This text also recognises and highlights a few of the amazingly talented ladies from each state who are successful in the tattoo industry.  They share an honest insight into how they got started, what they love and loathe, their thoughts on tattooing, gender stereotypes, media portrayals and personal stories while helping to encourage others to strive to accomplish their dreams and aspirations.’

A big thank you to Clare, and you can purchase the book via Amazon HERE.

New work – paisley detail

clareketon_tattoo_paisley
A lot of the tattoos I do are large pieces but I love doing smaller pieces too!  This was a fun little piece I did adding the paisley detail to a clients previous tattoo by another artist.

I’m taking bookings for large and small tattoos for 2016, please contact me to go on the wait list!

New work – peony sleeve tattoo

Sleeve of peonies and wattle flowers
I recently completed this sleeve of peony and wattle flowers, I loved working on this tattoo!  We only had time to snap a few photos on my phone before my client had to rush off and catch a plane home, but she’ll be sending me some more photos soon.  Thanks Eli!

welcome to Clare Keton Tattoos

WELCOME TO MY BLOG!  I’ll be sharing tattoos I’m currently working on, finished pieces, and my art with you here.

I’m a Tattoo Artist based in Melbourne (Australia) and I specialise in traditional, oriental and indigenous tattoo art.

I was undertaking a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in painting) degree in 1994 when I was offered a government accredited apprenticeship by Skin Deep Tattoo in Hawaii, America.  Since completing the apprenticeship I’ve worked at tattoo studios and conventions in the United Kingdom, Europe, Tahiti, Hawaii and Mainland America, Thailand and Australia.  I have also traveled and worked with tattoo artists in Japan and Switzerland.

My travels and studies have given me invaluable knowledge of traditional and indigenous tattoo art and body beautification.  I draw on these influences, as well as my own culture, to create unique works.  I’m also a practicing artist, and have exhibited my work in the National Gallery of Victoria and various galleries around Melbourne.

I have been a practicing tattoo artist for over 15 years and during this time I’ve found that it’s not only your artistic ability that develops, but also your willingness to challenge yourself as an artist.

I’m currently working from a private studio in West Melbourne and taking bookings for 2016, please contact me with any enquiries.
